School System Overview

How Irvine’s school system works

Irvine has two public school districts, and the distinction catches families off guard more often than it should.

Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) serves the vast majority of Irvine’s residential neighborhoods. It runs one early childhood learning center, 24 elementary schools, 5 K-8 schools, 6 middle schools, and 5 comprehensive high schools, serving roughly 37,000 students.

Tustin Unified School District (TUSD) serves a small number of properties that carry an Irvine address but fall outside IUSD’s geographic boundaries — particularly some newer construction near the Tustin border and parts of the Orchard Hills area. TUSD is also a strong-performing district, but it is not IUSD.

Beyond the public system, Irvine has 51 private schools serving more than 7,400 students — roughly 15% of all Irvine K-12 students, above the California state average of 10%.

Before making an offer on any Irvine home where the schools matter, confirm the district using the IUSD School Locator at iusd.org/schools. Do not rely on the neighborhood name or listing details.

Public IUSD · Advanced Programs

Advanced Academic Programs

IUSD offers multiple tiers of advanced learning from elementary through high school. GATE screening is automatic — no parent referral required.

GATE — Gifted and Talented Education
All IUSD elementary students in grades 3–6 are automatically screened annually through the Multiple Criteria Measure (MCM) — no parent referral required. The MCM includes state test scores, a writing sample, and a non-verbal reasoning assessment. Students who qualify are placed in GATE cluster classrooms within their neighborhood school. GATE is offered at every IUSD elementary site.
APAAS — Alternative Program for Academically Advanced Students
A more intensive option at select campuses for grades 4–6 who score in the top percentile and prefer creative, self-directed approaches. Unlike GATE, APAAS requires family application. Applications open in January and close mid-February.

2025-26 APAAS sites: Brywood, Deerfield, Eastshore, Santiago Hills, Westpark (year-round), and Bonita Canyon (grade 4 only).
Middle School Advanced Learning
GATE cluster groupings continue into middle school. Programs vary by campus — contact your assigned middle school directly for details. All 6 IUSD dedicated middle schools are ranked in the Orange County top 100 by U.S. News 2026.
High School AP and Early College
All five IUSD comprehensive high schools offer extensive AP course catalogs. Portola’s open-access policy is the most permissive — students are not required to obtain teacher or counselor approval to enroll in AP courses. Portola has the highest AP rate in IUSD at 74%. Crean Lutheran (private) also runs an Early College program with actual college courses during the school day.

How to Enroll in IUSD

Enrollment — Step by Step

School assignment and neighborhood choice are the same decision in Irvine. Getting both right before you start making offers saves time and avoids falling in love with a home that feeds the wrong school.

1
Confirm Your School Before You Close
Use the IUSD School Locator at iusd.org/schools. Enter your address. The locator returns your assigned elementary, middle, and high school. Do this before making an offer — not after closing escrow. This is especially important in Great Park, Portola Springs, Cypress Village, and any address near the Tustin border.
2
Complete Online Pre-Enrollment
New IUSD students register through the Aeries Internet Registration (AIR) portal at registration.iusd.org. You need a valid Irvine address within IUSD boundaries. The online process takes approximately 20–30 minutes. Enrollment for 2026-27 opens March 6, 2026.
3
Submit Two Proofs of Residency
Accepted documents include: signed lease agreement or closing disclosure, utility bills (gas, electric, water, or trash dated within the last 45 days), or a pay stub showing your Irvine address. New construction buyers can use the developer’s New Communities K-12 Enrollment Address Verification Form from the sales office.
4
School Contacts You
After completing Steps 1 and 2, a staff member from your assigned school will contact you by phone or email within 24–48 hours for same-year enrollment, or 2–3 weeks for future-year enrollment. You do not need to appear at the school before this contact.
Intradistrict Transfer Lottery: If you want to attend a school other than your assigned neighborhood school, IUSD runs a School Choice lottery (typically January through late February). Approval depends on available space and is not guaranteed. Do not rely on School Choice as a backup plan if a specific school is a primary factor in your purchase decision.
Special Notes for Families Relocating from Outside the US
  • IUSD is not SEVP-certified. Students on B, F-1, J-1, or M visas cannot enroll without risking their visa status. Consult an immigration attorney before enrolling.
  • International transcripts are accepted. Bring official sealed transcripts from previous schools, particularly if your student plans to apply to US colleges.
  • Grade-level placement for students from international school systems is handled case-by-case by the assigned school.
  • Free for Buyers

    School assignment and neighborhood choice
are the same decision in Irvine.

If you want to be matched with an Irvine specialist who knows the school boundary nuances and can focus your search on the right streets — specific high school, GATE access, proximity to Mandarin programs, elementary school preference — we can do that. No cost to buyers.
