Irvine Schools:The Complete Guide
Irvine Unified School District is ranked #1 in Orange County and top 100 nationally. Every level of schooling covered — preschool through high school, public and private — with rankings, enrollment steps, and what parents actually need to know.
How Irvine’s school system works
Irvine has two public school districts, and the distinction catches families off guard more often than it should.
Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) serves the vast majority of Irvine’s residential neighborhoods. It runs one early childhood learning center, 24 elementary schools, 5 K-8 schools, 6 middle schools, and 5 comprehensive high schools, serving roughly 37,000 students.
Tustin Unified School District (TUSD) serves a small number of properties that carry an Irvine address but fall outside IUSD’s geographic boundaries — particularly some newer construction near the Tustin border and parts of the Orchard Hills area. TUSD is also a strong-performing district, but it is not IUSD.
Beyond the public system, Irvine has 51 private schools serving more than 7,400 students — roughly 15% of all Irvine K-12 students, above the California state average of 10%.
